When it comes to losing weight, men have it made. When men ask their doctors about losing weight, the advice usually given involves eating better and exercising more. This advice, if followed, will most likely work for many men. Moreover, simply exercising will often work. This story is completely different for women.

This is important since muscle is what largely determines your metabolism, and it is something that can be changed by exercise and proper nutrition, Thyroid – The thyroid controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones. It’s long been known that a very overactive thyroid can be associated with weight loss, and a very under active thyroid linked to weight gain.
If people feel they have gained an excessive amount of weight they should discuss with their physicians whether thyroid function testing should be considered. Dieting can be stressful and having that extra support from a friend or family member can make all the difference. Stress – Weight gain can be caused by too much stress.
Too much stress can also affect the release of Cortisol, a stress hormone that builds fat in the abdominal region, making weight loss difficult. Proper nutrition and exercise can help to control stress and weight gain. Signs of stress may include eating too much or not enough, sleeping too much or not enough, and increased alcohol, nicotine, or drug use. Sleep – It is important that you get 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
There is an association between sleep deprivation and obesity that appears to be strongest in young and middle-aged adults. Several large studies have shown than the obesity problem in the United States might be happening because sleep deprivation could be disrupting hormones that regulate appetite and glucose metabolism. Also note that sleep apnea can be attributed to obesity. If you suspect that you or someone you know has sleep apnea, contact your doctor for a solution.
Exercise – The benefits of exercise cannot be stressed enough. Physical exercise is important to maintaining a healthy weight, building and maintaining healthy bone density, promoting physiological well-being, and strengthening your immune system. Exercise also reduces levels of Cortisol. (see Stress) Estrogen – Estrogen is known to accelerate metabolism (burn fat) which helps to keep your weight lower.
However, after menopause, when estrogen levels plummet, it becomes more important to monitor your weight in order to maintain a heart healthy weight. It has also been found that, in some women, normal monthly fluctuations in estrogen levels can make it more difficult to lose weight during certain times of the month. Eating Disorders – Eating disorders are estimated to affect 5-10 million females and 1 million males in the United States. 40% of girls aged 9 and 10 years old are already trying to lose weight.
It is not known what causes eating disorders but it is thought that it is a combination of physical, biological, and environmental causes. Insulin – Insulin has a profound effect on metabolism. There are slightly more women than men who have insulin insensitivity and diabetes, the conversion of sugar into fat remains a major problem for anyone trying to lose weight. Weight gains, fat storage, and difficulty losing weight are symptoms of Insulin Resistance.
For most people, too much weight means too much fat. The fat in IR is generally stored in and around abdominal organs in both males and females. It is currently suspected that hormonal effects from such fat are a precipitating cause of insulin resistance.
